FORT LOUDOUN ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENTS

Below are the alternative assignments on Fort Loudoun.  Students can submit only one of the three assignments listed below.  If higher than a student’s lowest exam score, the score for the alternative assignment will be substituted for that lowest exam score.(25 points)

In an essay identify and discuss the ways in which Fort Loudoun was representative of the westward expansion of British North America.  In your essay address the reasons for and obstacles to this expansion, the progress of this expansion up to the beginning of the French and Indian War, and the role played by the fort in this expansion, particularly with respect to the obstacles it was to overcome.  As part of your essay cover the relevant events, individuals, groups, and nations in the history of the fort.

In an essay identify and discuss the ways in which Fort Loudoun was representative of British North America's relations with Indians.  In your essay address the reasons why the fort was built, the ways in which it was representative of British relations with the Indians, and what the fort accomplished.  As part of your essay cover the relevant events, individuals, groups, and nations in the history of the fort.

Select a soldier who served at Fort Loudoun. (You will find a list of these soldiers in Paul Kelley's book on Fort Loudoun.)  From the perspective of that soldier write a series of diary entries during his service at the fort.  In these entries describe life in the fort, relations and interactions with the local Cherokees, concerns about and interactions with the French and other groups of Indians, and feelings about being on the fringe of British North American westward expansion.

In order to earn credit for your alternative assignment, you must meet the requirements below.

• The paper must be between three and five pages in length, including the essay and a bibliography and excluding any title page without text.
• All components of the assignment must be submitted to me by email or in paper form, generated by a typewriter or computer printer.  Handwritten submissions will not be accepted.
• The paper must include a bibliography, following one of a number of accepted forms for bibliographic citations.
• The following deadlines must be met in completion of the assignment.  Missing any of these deadlines will disqualify the assignment from being accepted.
• October 12 - Submit your choice of options for this alternative assignment.
• November 2 - Submit a preliminary bibliography.
• The bibliography must consist of at least two websites and two books, not including any of the assigned texts for History 2010.
• November 16 - Submit an outline or preliminary draft of your paper.
• November 30 - Submit your completed essay and final bibliography.
