Guidance Letter A-015

CLEVELAND STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Cleveland, Tennessee

SUBJECT:  Course and Section Numbering

  1. Section Numbering
Every section of a course is identified by the alphabetical discipline prefix, the course number, and a particular section number reflecting traditional grading scale or P/NP grading option.  In the section number, the traditional grading scale will be identified by an alphabetical indication in the last digit of the section number (example:  Section number 300 would indicate a course meeting at a business/industry site with the traditional grading scale; section number 30A would indicate a course meeting at a business/industry site with the P/NP grading option.  Letters will be determined by the number of the last digit; that is, 0 = A, 1 = B, 2 = C, etc.)  The beginning digits of the section number identify the following categories:
    1. 100-199 Day Sections – Regular Semester and First Summer School Session
    2. 200-299 Day Sections – Regular Semester and Second Summer School Session

    1. 2800 Courses, Special topics in _______________________________
These courses are pilot courses or special interest courses for business, industry, and other groups and are tracked by title and a specific course number (2801, 2802, etc.).  All syllabi for these courses should include the statement that there should be no expectation that the course will be repeated.
    2. 2900 Courses, Individualized Studies in _________________________
Individualized study courses may be offered in all academic disciplines as the need arises.  These courses will not be printed in the published schedule but must be entered into the schedule every term the course is offered.  A student may take a total of nine (9) hours of individualized study in a discipline (ARTH, ENGL, etc.).  A student may not repeat the same course under the same number in the department.  For example, if a student takes ARTH 2901, the student may not take ARTH 2901 again, but may take ARTH 2902 until he/she has exhausted all available numbers to a total of nine (9) hours.
The following procedures must be followed:
      1. The student must request the course and obtain the permission of the instructor.
      2. Both the advisor and the course instructor must verify that the student has not previously taken the course under a specific number.
      3. The instructor must then notify the Division Dean.
      4. A report will be generated during each term to determine if any student is repeating a course under the same number to allow for corrections.
