Emergency Medical Technician Students

Prospective students come with a wide variety of backgrounds and a wide variety of questions. This list cannot begin to answer all your questions, but it is intended to answer at least some of the most frequently asked ones.

  1. What is the admission date?
We suggest that you start the application process early (spring/summer before the fall semester you wish to register) so we have time to process the information and advise you.
  1. Who can be admitted to the EMT class?
You must be 18 year of age on or prior to the first day of class. You must have an academic high school diploma or GED. You must be admitted to Cleveland State Community College prior to admission to EMT class. Priority for admission into the EMT class is given to the following individuals who serve in a “first response” capacity. Fire department personnel, ambulance personnel, police personnel, lifeguard personnel, EMT personnel, and Emergency Room nurses. All others will be assigned space as available. Students must maintain a current card denoting successful completion of a professional rescuer CPR course while in the EMT class.

Please note that a criminal background check is a requirement at the affiliated clinical sites for training. Based on the results of these checks, an affiliated clinical site may determine to not allow your presence at their facility. This could result in your inability to successfully complete the requirements of this program. Additionally, a criminal background is a mandatory part of applying for an EMT state license.
  1. Will I have to have a physical exam?
Yes, students are required to undergo a physical exam/health verification. Each student is required to be able to lift a certain amount of weight. There is a specific form needed to be filled out by the student’s personal physician that each student will receive on the first day of class.
  1. Will I have to wear a uniform?
Yes, students are required to wear a uniform for class and the clinical experience. Additional information regarding the uniform will be provided on the first day of class.
  1. Do I have to be licensed to be an EMT?
Yes. Students successfully completing the EMT class will be eligible to take the National Registry Exam.
  1. How long does the EMT class last?
The standard two semester class ( EMT 1010 & EMT 1020) begins each fall semester and finishes in the spring semester. EMT 1010 & EMT 1020 are both 8 credit hours and consist of 8 class hours per week. Upon successful completion of the program a student will be eligible to take the licensure exam, which if passed, the student will hold a TN EMT-IV license and hold a National Registry EMT-B license.
There is an accelerated class for persons with some type of previous rescue experience. EMT 1030 meets at the Athens campus and is 16 credit hours. The class meets two days a week/8 hours a day. This class is offered every fall and spring semester. Admission to this class is on a case by case basis. In addition to class time (standard and accelerated EMT) there are required hours in a clinical setting – 12 hours in an approved ER and 60 hours with an approved EMS agency to successfully complete the EMT training.
  1. Will I be able to work full-time while attending class?
Yes. The class is held two days a week. At present, two standard classes are being offered: one day class and one evening class on the Cleveland campus. There is one accelerated class being offered during the day at the Athens campus.
