Emergency Medical Technician Students

Prospective students come with a wide variety of backgrounds and a wide variety of questions. This list cannot begin to answer all your questions, but it is intended to answer at least some of the most frequently asked ones.

1. What is the admission date?
We suggest you start the application process early (spring/summer before the fall semester you wish to register) so we have time to process the information and advise you.

2. Who can be admitted to the EMT class?
You must be 18 years of age. You must be admitted to Cleveland State Community College prior to admission to the EMT class. Priority for admission into the EMT class is given to the following individuals who serve in a "first response" capacity. Fire Department Personnel, Ambulance Personnel, Police Personnel, Lifeguard Personnel, EMT Personnel, and Emergency Room Registered Nurses. All others will be assigned space as available. Students must maintain a current card denoting successful completion of a Professional Rescuer CPR course while in the EMT classes.

Please note that criminal background checks may be a requirement at some affiliated clinical sites for training. Based on the results of these checks, an affiliated clinical site may determine to not allow your presence at their facility. This could result in your inability to successfully complete the requirements of this program. Additionally, a criminal background may preclude licensure or employement. More information is available from your program director.

3. Will I have to have a physical exam?
Yes, students are required to undergo physical exam/health verification. Each student is required to be able to lift a certain amount of weight.

4. Will I have to wear a uniform?
Yes. Students are required to wear a uniform for the clinical experience.

5. Do I have to be licensed to be an EMT?
Yes. Successful students will be eligible to take the National Registry Exam.

6. How long does the EMT class last?

EMT 1020 is 8 credit hours and consists of 8 class hours per week. IV Therapy is included in EMT 1020. Ten hours are spent in a hospital emergency room and/or ambulance service
