Emergency Medical Services

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Programs will train students in emergency medical care techniques appropriate for each level of training.

The EMT program is delivered through a combination of classroom instruction (didactic and psychomotor) and clinical experience. Upon completion of the all EMSB courses, the student will be eligible to take the National Registry written and practical exam at the EMT level, which leads to National Registry certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic and licensure in the State of Tennessee as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. The EMT renders life support to patients at the scene of their injuries or illnesses and prepares these patients for transport to the hospital.

Advance EMT program includes basic and limited advanced skills focused on the acute management and transportation of critical and emergent patients. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician has the knowledge associated with, and is expected to be competent in, all of the skills of the EMR and EMT. Additional studies include pharmacological interventions, tracheobronchial suctioning of an already intubated patient and intravenous therapy. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician renders basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene of their injuries or illness and continues this treatment while transporting these patients to the hospital. This program follows the guidelines set by the National Scope of Practice Model and is designed to help prepare individuals for licensure as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician by the Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Health Licensure and Regulation, Office of Emergency Medical Services.

Paramedic program is delivered through a combination of classroom instruction (didactic and psychomotor skills) and a blend of clinical/field experience. Upon successful completion of the Paramedic Certificate courses, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry’s written and practical examinations. Upon successful completion of those examinations and other licensure requirements, the student will be eligible for the State of Tennessee Paramedic license. The Paramedic renders basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene of their injuries or illnesses and continues this treatment while transporting these patients to the hospital. Upon successful completion of the Paramedic program, which is a three-semester program that starts in the fall semester and is completed the end of the summer semester, students will be eligible to take the National Registry exam, which leads to National Registry certification as a Paramedic and licensure in Tennessee as a Paramedic.
