The Cleveland State Cougar baseball team captured a pair of wins from the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs JV team on Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Field by scores of 7-3 in the first game and 8-3 in the second game. The Cougars banged out 15 hits in the twinbill as they ran their season record to 21-9. Cody Ferrell (5-2) went six strong innings to get the win in game one striking out 11 along the way while Matt Beard pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Seth Phillips took the loss for the Bulldogs. After putting an unearned run on the board in the first inning, the Cougars added four more in the second. Troy Zawadzki doubled and scored on an error, Cory Hilton pushed a run across on a bases loaded walk, Cody Hooper knocked one in with a fielders choice grounder and Quentin Bowman doubled in the fourth run to give the home team a 5-0 lead. Wesleyan got on the board in the third on a Cougar miscue, but the Cougars returned the favor in the fourth with an unearned run to leave the score at 6-2. Garrett Casson drove in a run for the Bulldogs in the sixgth with a single and Adam Hindman countered with a run scoring single in the bottom of the frame to account for the final score of 7-3. The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in game two as Brian Miracle knocked in a run in the top of the second with a single. Cleveland State put a four spot on the board in the third as Lance Rorex singled to start the rally, Zawadzki doubled and Drew Fox drew a base on balls to load the bases for Cody Hooper who promptly unloaded them with a long grand slam home run to give the Cougars a 4-1 lead. The Cougars scored three more times an inning later on a wild pitch an error and a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Hooper to push the lead to 7-1. Former McMinn County Cherokee, Tanner Quirk sinlged in a run for the Bulldogs in the fifth and the visitors added an unearned run in the seventh while Lance Rorex nailed a solo homer for the Cougars to cap off the scoring and a Cougar win. Drew Housewright (1-1) got the win for the Cougars while Chad Fromm, Stephen Pryor, Zane Leffew, Chris Anselmo and Phil Mariani all took their turn on the hill for the Cougars. Tyler Hogan suffered the loss for the Bulldogs while Chad Shelton and Russell Jones pitched in relief. Six different Cougars garnered a hit each in game one while Zawadzki went 3-4 Hooper went 2-2 with 5 RBIs and Rorex went 2-2 in game two. Casson had two of the three Bulldog hits in game one while Quirk went 2-4 in game two. The Cougars will now travel to Columbia state for a key Region VII weekend series. |
