The Cleveland State Cougars were able to play a little bit of baseball on Tuesday afternoon between snow showers as they notched their 30th win of the season with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the visiting Wallace State Lions. The Cougars needed one of their patented last at-bat comebacks to squeek out a win over the Lions as both teams braved the frigid temperatures.

The Lions jumped on top with a run in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI double from Tyler Hannah for a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Lance Rorex that turned into a base hit. A throwing error on the same play plated the run to tie the game at 1-1.

Wallace State jumped back on top with single runs in the sixth and seventh on a bases loaded walk and a fielders choice to take a 3-1 lead.

Cory Hilton cut the lead to a single digit at 3-2, with a sacrifice fly for an RBI in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Chris anselmo who had walked to start the inning

The 20th ranked Cougars knocked just enough ice off their bats in the bottom of the eighth inning to push a pair of runs across to take the lead. Matt Brewer singled and moved to second on a nice sacrifice bunt by Jay Huffman to start the rally. Anselmo then reached on a key error and Troy Zawadzki promptly followed with a game tying single while Andrew Root was plunked with the next pitch to load the bases. Hilton managed to hit a slow roller to third and push the go-ahead run across the plate for a 4-3 Cougar lead.

Travis Tingle (5-1) struck out the side in the ninth to nail down the win and run the Cleveland State record to 30-9 on the season. Tingle tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Phil Mariani who started the game. Carlton Paris took the loss in relief of Ben Hawkins who started for the Lions. Tyler Hannah had two hits to lead Wallace State while Zawadzki and Cody Ferrell had two hits each for the Cougars.

The Cougars will travel to Young Harris on Wednesday and then head to Dyersburg State for a weekend series.
