YOUNG HARRIS, GA. - The roar of the Mountain Lion was loud and clear on Wednesday afternoon as the Cleveland State Cougars 12 game win streak came to an end with a 12-5 loss on the road to Young Harris.
The game seesawed back and forth throughout the first few innings before the Mountain Lions broke loose to turn a close game into a runaway. The bat racks warmed with the weather as the teams combined for 30 hits in the contest.
The Cougars jumped on top in the first as Andrew Root doubled in a run and Adam Hindman plated another with a groundout for a 2-0 lead.
After the Mountain Lions had taken a 3-2 lead with two runs in the first and another in the second, the Cougars regained the lead in the third on a Cody Hooper double and a passed ball for a 4-3 lead.
Troy Zawadzki pushed the lead to 5-3 an inning later with an RBI single, but that would be the end of the scoring for the Cougars while the Mountain Lions were just getting started.
Young Harris tied the game one more time in the fourth and then broke loose with a five run fifth to take a 10-5 lead. Bryson Smith and Daniel Warzon provided the big blow for the home team with a two-run single each.
The Mountain Lions tacked on two more in the seventh as Warzon picked up his third hit of the day, this time an RBI triple, and Derrick Lowrey capped the scoring with an run scoring single to complete the win for Young Harris.
Jeff Brown picked up the win for Young Harris in relief of starter, Bryan Cole. Warzon, Austin Shultz and Matt Lowery paced the Mountain Lions 17 hit attack with three hits apiece. Drew Housewright suffered the loss for Cleveland State (30-10) in relief of Cody Ferrell who started. Zane Leffew and Matt Beard also saw time on the hill for the Cougars. Hooper paced Cleveland State with three hits while Root, Zawadzki, Cory Hilton and Hindman added two hits each.
The Cougars will travel to Dyersburg State for a weekend series.
