Cleveland State Cougar first baseman, Cody Hooper was recently selected as the TCCAA Region VII Player of the week for the week of March 7-13.
The Cougar slugger played a large part in the weekend conference series sweep of the Motlow State Bucks by going 5-9 in the three game set with three homers, five RBIs a walk and four runs scored.
Hooper came up with the game-tying hit in two of the games as the Cougars were down to their last out both times. Due to the rain, the series was pushed back to Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, Hooper crushed a two-out, two-run homer to tie the game and send it into extra winnings as the Cougars would win in the tenth, 6-5. On Monday in the second game of the doubleheader, the Hooper lightning struck once again as the Cougars trailed by a run down to their last out, this time providing an RBI single to tie the game in dramatic fashion. Hooper then scored the winning run to finish off the sweep.
"Cody really came up big for us over the weekend," said Cougar coach Mike Policastro. "He basically won two of the games for us with big two out hits. He had a great series and has really hit the ball well all year."
The 6'3 sophomore from Gordon Central High School in Ranger Georgia is hitting a cool .395 for the season with eight homers and 28 RBIs and has helped the Cougars to a 16-8 record overall and a 7-3 conference mark.
