"We had a great run to start the second half, but I knew that they would make a run at us and they did. They are really good and really athletic and we went big in the second half to help off set that. When we had a small lead in the final minute, we just were not going to let them shoot the three and it worked out well."

TOP SEEDED TEAMS TAKE TOURNAMENT TITLES
A week-long event of exciting College basketball action came to a close on Sunday afternoon with the crowning of a Champion in each of the men's and women's division as the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Basketball Tournament wrapped up in the L.Quentin Lane Gymnasium on the campus of Cleveland State Community College.
The Cleveland State Cougars dream of a National Tournament birth came up one game short of the goal as they fell to the fourth ranked and top seeded Southwest Tennessee Saluqis (25-1) by a final score of 93-64. The top seeded and third ranked Walters State Lady Senators took care of business as they remained undefeated at 30-0 by cruising to an 88-67 win over the Volunteer State Lady Pioneers.
The run and gun Saluqis hit the Cougars with a 19-6 run to start the game as Myron Strong connected from almost every possible point on the court. Strong scored the first four points of the game with a pair of layups, slammed home two more with a dunk on the back end of a steal and then stepped back and let fly with a long 3-pointer just for good measure.
The Cougar offense came to life midway through the first half as they made a couple of mini-runs, cutting the lead to 21-14 on a nice driving layup from Chauncey Thompson. But, each time the Saluqis answered as they pushed the lead to 14 points at the halftime break, 46-32.
It was more of the same as the Saluqis hit another gear and steadily extended their lead throughout the second half. Strong started like he did in the first half with a pair of layups as the lead went to 20 points. A three-point play from the Cougar's Chauncey Thompson and an inside scoop shot by Willie Smith helped Cleveland State cut the lead back under 20 points midway through the half, but it was not nearly enough as the Saluqis put it on cruise control the rest of the way to take home the title and secure a spot in the National Tournament next week in Hutchinson, Kansas.
"We came up short today, but I am very proud of my team," explained Cougar coach Lee Cigliano. "We were down to only eight players and the way that they just kept playing hard and never gave up especially at the end of the season was great. We competed with some really good teams and we beat two very good teams here in the tournament so I couldn't be more proud of this bunch."
"We are the runner-up and we don't get the championship, but Southwest was the better team today by far, and they should represent our region well. They are an amazing team and they deserved to win the tournament. We have been the region runner-up two out of the last three years both times to Southwest so that's pretty good. The thing I'll remember about this team is the heart and the never give up attitude."
Jeremy Rodgers led the Saluqis with 27 points, Strong finished with 18 and DeAngelo Riley added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Thompson paced the Cougars (20-9) with 26 points, Willie Smith finished with 18 points and nine rebounds while Ryan Westbrooks added 15 points. The Saluqis shot a sizzling 58 percent from the floor in the second half and 52 percent for the game. Williams, Riley, Strong and Jeremy Rodgers (MVP) were selected to the All-TCCAA Tournament Team while Thompson and Westbrooks represented Cleveland State.
WALTERS STATE 88 VOLUNTEER STATE 67
In the women's title game, the top seeded and third ranked Walters State Lady Senators completed a perfect tournament run with a convincing 88-67 win over the Volunteer State Lady Pioneers and in the process punched their ticket to the NJCAA National Tournament next week in Sailna, Kansas.
The teams started the game as if it were a heavyweight boxing title match with the lead changing hands 12 times in the opening 10 minutes of the game. LaKrystle Goss nailed a pair of 3-pointers in a row and Derika Mooney made it three in a row as the Lady Senators took the lead and would never give it up again. Goss hit her third shot from three-point land moments later as Walters State finished off a 12-5 run midway through the half.
Volunteer State just kept coming as a bucket from Vee Young cut the lead back to two points, but once again the Lady Senators took off on one of their patented runs, this time 13-2, to finish the half and take a 41-28 advantage at the break.
The Lady Pioneers opened the second half with a 13-6 run, cutting the lead to 47-41, but it was all Walters State after that as the lead ballooned to 20 points midway through the second half. The celebration started early for the Lady Senators as they put it on cruise control the rest of the way to take the Tournament Title and punch their ticket to the National Tourney as well.
