HENDERSONVILLE - The Cleveland State softball team brought home the first place hardware on Sunday afternoon as they dominated the Club K Invitational Softball Tournament over the weekend from start to finish, notching six straight wins along the way. The Lady Cougars pounded their way to the tournament title with an incredible 55 runs and 67 hits in only six games.

The Lady Cougars opened up pool play on Friday afternoon with a pair of wins over Kishwaukee (Illinois) College 5-1 and Jackson State 9-1. On Saturday, the Cleveland State ladies reeled off four more wins, topping Gadsden State 12-9 and Volunteer State 9-5 to complete pool play and then turned right around and beat Volunteer State again in the semifinals, 10-8 and completed their perfect tournament run with a run rule decision over Jackson State for the title, 10-2.

"I am very proud of the way the girls played this weekend," stated Lady Cougar coach Suzanne Bayne. "This weekend was a total team effort in all phases with great hitting, pitching and defense. I am looking forward to the momentum being carried into next week's games."

In the championship game on Saturday night, the Lady Cougars scored early and often as they put four runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning and another run in the third. Madison McKinney knocked in a pair of runs in the second with a double while Abby O'Rear doubled in the third and later scored on a passed ball to give the Lady Cougars a 5-0 lead.

Mercedes Norfork hit a two-run homer for Jackson State in the top of the fifth, but that would not be enough to deny the Lady Cougars the win as they got those two back in the bottom of the frame plus three more for good measure to secure the Championship. After two runs scored on an error, Holli Redmon pushed the lead past the run rule with a two-run single.

The Lady Cougars banged out 12 hits in the Championship game while Brittany Tipton went the distance to get the win tossing five innings and allowing only four hits. Cassie Yates took the loss for Jackson State.

The Lady Cougars finished up pool play on Saturday morning as they out-slugged Gadsden State in game one of the day. Stacie Scott singled in a run in the top of the first while Kelsey Hayes dialed long distance twice with a solo shot in the third and a two-run blast in the fourth. Madison McKinney added a two-run dinger of her own to give the Lady Cougars an 8-0 lead.

The Lady Cardinals mounted a comeback as Kayla Cox hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth and then cut the lead to 8-7 an inning later as they strung six hits together for four more runs.

Cleveland State got one of those runs back in the sixth, but once again Gadsden tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the frame. Joanie Goodner doubled in a pair of runs in the seventh while English Nichols pushed another across with a single as well to finally secure the win for the Lady Cougars. Scott got the win on the mound for Cleveland State while Tipton pitched in relief.

McKinney knocked in a pair of runs with a single in the second game on Saturday and the final game of pool play while Tipton mashed a solo homer and the Lady Cougars capitalized on several Volunteer State errors to take their fourth straight win.

Tipton pitched seven strong innings to get the win while Chandra Brooks took the loss for the Lady Pioneers. Leah Newman went 3-3 with 3 RBI's, while Tipton also had 3 RBI's.

The Lady Cougars needed a dramatic last at-bat comeback in the semifinal matchup, again with Volunteer State. Trailing 6-2, the Cleveland State ladies just kept chipping away with a run in the second and two more in the fourth, but still trailed 8-5 entering the bottom of the sixth.

McKinney tied the game with one swing for a three-run homer and moments later Tipton propelled the Lady Cougars into the championship game with a two-run double to complete the incredible comeback win. Courtney Patrick started while Tipton picked up the win in relief. Kristen Todd took the loss for the Lady Pioneers. McKinney went 4-4 with 4 RBI's.

On Friday, the Lady Cougars opened pool play with a pair of impressive wins. Patrick tossed seven strong innings and allowed only three hits as she went the distance to get the win. Casey Latal took the loss for Kishwaukee.

McKinney got her tournament off and running with a three-run homer in the third to give Cleveland State a 4-0 lead which would more than enough run support for Patrick as the Lady Cougars took game one.

In the second game on Friday, with the game tied at 1-1, the Lady Cougars broke out in a big way with five runs in the fifth all with two outs. Hayes and Scott each singled in a run while Paige Smith singled in two more for a 5-1 lead.

The Lady Cougars put the game away an inning later as Hayes knocked in a pair of runs with a single and Smith pushed the final run across with a sacrifice fly. Tipton went the distance to get the win allowing only five hits while striking out seven along the way while Cassi Yates took the loss for Jackson State.

The Cleveland State softball team rebounded nicely on a cool Tuesday afternoon at Lady Cougar Field with a doubleheader sweep of the Young Harris Mountain Lions. After a tough game defensively the last time out, the Lady Cougars used a few timely hits, good pitching and an outstanding defensive effort as they took game one 4-1 and then needed extra innings in game two to post a come-from-behind 3-2 win.

"I am very excited about both games today," explained Lady Cougar coach Suzanne Bayne. "We talked things over after the debacle last week against Florence Darlington and then practiced hard the last three days. The girls really responded and played well in all facets of the game today. We got great pitching from Courtney, Brittany and Stacie and we really picked it up on defense. It was a total team effort today and that is what we need to be successful."

Ashley Malone got the Lady Cougars off and running in the second inning of game one with a two-run single while Kelsey Hayes followed with an RBI single of her own to give the home team a quick 3-0 lead.

Young Harris cut the lead to 3-1 with a single talley in the third, but that would be all that Lady Cougar starting pitcher Courtney Patrick would allow as she would go the distance to pick up the win. Rikki Powers took the loss for Young Harris. Stacie Scott provided an insurance run in the sixth by getting plunked with the bases loaded for an RBI the hard way as the Lady Cougars took game one.

Young Harris took the early lead in game two with a single run in each of the first two innings. The score stayed right there until the bottom of the sixth as the Lady Cougars staged a comeback.

A pair of walks and a nice sacrifice bunt set the stage for Leah Newman who, with two outs, promptly one-hopped the centerfield fence for a game-tying double.

The Lady Cougars finished the comeback in the bottom of the eighth as coach Bayne decided to roll the dice and called for a suicide squeeze bunt with the bases loaded and only one out. Dee Elswick didn't lay down the best bunt ever, but it worked. Elswick popped the pitch straight up, out in front of the plate. The Young Harris catcher tried to make a diving catch, but couldn't quite pull it in. As the ball hit off her glove and trickled from fair to foul territory, the winning run crossed home plate. Thus, a squeeze bunt that landed about a foot and a half in front of home plate became a walk-off base hit for Elswick.

"It wasn't the prettiest bunt I've ever seen, but it got the job done," said Bayne. "Dee had struggled at the plate today, but somehow she managed to get the bunt down and I am happy for her."

Brittany Tipton started game two while Stacie Scott picked up the win in relief for the Lady Cougars (5-3). Victoria Sink took the loss for the Mountain Lions (6-6).

The Cleveland State softball felt the sting of the Florence Darlington Lady Sting on Friday afternoon at Lady Cougar Field as the South Carolina Technical college team swept a doubleheader from the Lady Cougars, 8-6 in the first game and 9-6 in the second.

Spring-like weather greeted the teams, but it didn't help the Cleveland State gloves as they committed eight errors in game one. The Lady Sting took a 6-1 lead into the fifth inning before the Lady Cougars started a comeback.

Florence Darlington returned the favor as the Lady Cougars scored four times in the fifth on a balk, a bases loaded walk, a bases loaded hit batter and a single from Leah Newman to slice the lead to 6-5. Newman knocked in another for the Lady Cougars in the sixth, but
the Rally would end there though as the Lady Sting added a pair of runs in the sixth to secure the win.

Game two went back and forth as the Lady Cougars jumped on top, 5-2 with three runs in the second inning. With two-outs, Paige Smith doubled in a pair of runs and Dee Elswick followed with a two-run single.

The Lady Sting regained the lead with three runs in the third and two more in the sixth and seventh. Newman plated a run for the Lady Cougars in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, but it was too little to late as the home team dropped both games.

Meagan McClain claimed the pitching victory for the Lady Sting in game one while Lauren Osborne got the win in game two. Brittany Tipton took the loss for the Lady Cougars (3-3) in game one while Stacie Scott got the loss in game two.

Logan Parker, Brittany Goodwin, Brittany Geren and Kayla Boles all had three hits in game two for the Lady Sting while Kelsey Hayes led the Lady Cougars with three hits, Dee Elswick and Joannie Goodner had two hits apiece.

The Lady Cougars will host Young Harris on Tuesday at 2:00.

Cleveland State kicked off it's 2010 softball campaign on a frigid Thursday afternoon as they welcomed the Lee University junior varsity team to Lady Cougar Field. The Lady Cougars came within one out of sweeping the doubleheader from the Lady Flames, but could only manage a split. The Lady Flames staged a dramatic two-out last inning comeback to win game one by a final score of 5-4 while the Lady Cougars rebounded in a big way to take the second game by a lopsided final of 18-4.

In game one, the Lady Cougars struck first with a three-spot in the third inning. Kelsey Hayes started the rally with a one out infield single and Paige Smith drew a walk to push Hayes to second. With runners on second and third, Madison McKinney rolled a grounder to shortstop, but the throw to the plate was late as Hayes scored just ahead of the tag. Dee Elswick then followed with an RBI single to right field to plate a run and Stacie Scott knocked in a run with a groudout to give the Cleveland State ladies a 3-0 lead.

Lee came right back in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs as Whitney Day singled in a pair to cut the lead to 3-2. The Lady Flames tied the game an inning later as Charlie Wooden singled in a run.

The Lady Cougars squeezed in the go-ahead run in the bottom fo the fifth as a hard ground ball from Elswick found it's way into right field scoring Paige Smith who had walked for a 4-3 advantage.

Down to their last out, the Lady Flames staged a comeback by picking up a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Wooden started the rally with a two-out double while Katie Deems and Tiffany Wade added an RBI single each to give the visitors a 5-4 lead.

The Lady Cougars loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but a fly to right fielder, Tenisha Carey turned into a game ending double play as Carey threw a strike to the plate, nailing the runner to end the game.

Wooden had three hits while Wade added two for the Lady Flames. McKinney and Elswick had two hits each for Cleveland State.

Courtney Patrick started on the mound for the Lady Cougars, scattered six hits and tossed five strong innings while Brittany Tipton took the loss while tossing the final two innings.

The Lady Flames scored first in the second game, Cleveland State took the lead in the bottom of the second with three runs, but a three-run homer from Charlie Wooden put the visitors back on top, 4-3. But, from that point on it was all Lady Cougars as they quickly turned a one-run deficit into a blowout.

The Lady Cougars finally chipped all the ice off of their bats in the bottom of the third inning and proceeded to put 12 runs on the board. The inning started with six straight walks. Kelsey Hayes and Stacie Scott then took over with the big stick by dialing long distance as each Lady Cougar slugger belted a grand slam for eight quick runs. McKinney added an RBI double and when the dust had finally settled on the third inning the Lady Cougars led 15-4.

Hollie Redmon added an RBI single in the fourth frame while McKinney and Dee Elswick had a sacrifice fly each to finish off the win for the Lady Cougars.

Brittany Tipton went the distance for the Lady Cougars (1-1) to get the win while Katie Deems took the loss.
