Cleveland State Lady Cougar Softball Adds Two More

Cleveland State Lady Cougar Softball Coach Suzanne Bayne recently announced the signings of two more for the 2008-09 year.

Hannah West from nearby Sweetwater High School will be joining her former high school teammate Casey Newton as a Lady Cougar next year.  According to her high school coach Eric Weaver, “Hannah is one of the best team leaders I have had on the high school level. Her speed and ability allowed me to play her at different positions to promote a team chemistry for success.”  West was honored by her peers for her outstanding play on the field as she was named All County (3 years), All District (2 years), and All District Tournament Team (2 years).  According to Bayne, “We are excited that Hannah has chosen to start here at Cleveland State. She is a very versatile player that can be moved around to help us out where we need it the most.  When on the field she is a very determined and will hopefully help us achieve a lot this upcoming season.”

Ashley Jennings will be coming to Cleveland State from Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Georgia.  According to Bayne, “Ashley just kind of fell into our lap. She was a basketball teammate of one of our basketball signees (Christian  and they spoke with Coach Lumpkin while at Christian’s signing.  She had originally signed Division I, but had some academic issues that have brought her to us.  It is a well received gift. She is a very quick outfielder that will really fill a void that was left after last season. As a hitter she is a good contact hitter and uses her speed to her advantage.”  Jennings had a .373 batting average last year with 15 RBI’s. Wendy Mapp, her high school coach, states that “Ashley  played outfield for us. She has a great arm and catch anything.  She is a great pick up for you and your team.”

“Adding these two players really excites us as they will join 12 other newcomers in August.  I really think this incoming group will really help us as we move forward this year.  Each of them bring their strong points to the field and will help out the sophomores that we have returning” stated Bayne.
