"Coping with new technologies and feelings of isolation from the rest of the class can leave new distance learners discouraged and may even lead some to drop out. The following "tips and tricks" may help you succeed as a distance learner.
- Plan long-term, medium and short-term goals. Effective time management is essential, especially for students who are juggling other responsibilities with work and families.
- Set a study routine that reflects you. If you're not a morning person, don't set your study time at 6:00 a.m. Instead, set a time of the day when you feel alert for study.
- Take advantage of support services offered. Study skills and financial aid assistance are valuable resources that are free and available to students who indicate they have a need.
- Use e-mail. Contact lecturers, fellow students and other college support services through it. It saves time and money.
- Get on a student telephone contact list. That way if you miss an important Web discussion, you can turn to someone to help you catch up.
- Avoid procrastination. Set time to call lecturers or make it a point to fax or e-mail them on a regular basis.
- Don't be afraid to contact your professors. They are there to help you succeed.
