Student Development & Testing Services

Personal Counseling and Development

The goal of personal counseling services provided by Student Development and Testing is to provide assistance to students who are experiencing personal difficulties that impact their ability to pursue their educational goals. To support this goal, counselors

  • Provide a confidential setting where students can discuss personal issues that may be hindering student success;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community mental health providers so that staff may better refer students who need mental health services;
  • Facilitate workshops throughout the year to increase awareness of mental health and personal development issues;
  • Provide resources for students, faculty, and staff to educate them about mental health and personal development issues; and
  • Serve as support in on-campus emergencies involving students experiencing emotional problems.

Students should be aware that counselors are responsible for many non-counseling related functions as part of the Student Development and Testing staff. As such, counselors recognize their boundaries of competence regarding personal counseling and frequently refer students to local agencies that are equipped to provide ongoing mental health services.

Staff facilitate workshops each semester that are designed to increase student awareness of mental health and personal development issues. Common topics include Test Anxiety, Stress Management, Communication Skills, Goal Setting, Time Management, Learning Styles, and Memory Skills. The department also participates in several National Screening Day events throughout the year.
