Testing Services - Compass

Cleveland State’s Admissions and Records Office determines if you need to take the COMPASS. COMPASS is a computerized placement test that it used to determine if you are ready for college-level courses or if you need to take some developmental courses in Reading, Writing, or Math. If you are required to take the COMPASS, you will be issued a “testing ticket” that gives information on when and where to take the test. Generally, you can walk-in and take the COMPASS anytime the Testing Center is open. Testing must be completed prior to registering for classes.

The COMPASS is also used as a challenge test for students who have been placed into developmental courses based on their ACT scores. Students who wish to challenge their ACT placement should follow the directions on their “Official Placement Notification” form. There is a $20.00 fee for using the COMPASS as a challenge test.

The COMPASS has subject tests for Reading, Writing, and Math. Sample questions can be downloaded from http://www.act.org/compass/sample/. The test is untimed but it takes most students approximately two hours to finish all three parts. Calculators (subject to ACT guidelines) are permitted for the Math portion of the test. Test results are available immediately after the test is completed.
