Cleveland State Names Third Class of Presidential Honors Scholars

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Cleveland State Community College recently named its third class of Presidential Honors Scholarships.

The Presidential Honors Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship for the top high school graduates who attend CSCC. Students must be accepted into the CSCC Honors Program and will also participate in a Presidential Leadership Program. The Presidential Honors Scholarship is designed to assist students with books and other educational expenses, such as non-mandatory fees.

The minimum requirements include:

●          3.5 High School GPA or 24 minimum ACT score (or comparable SAT scores)

●          Must enroll in at least 15 credit hours each semester

 Must be accepted into the Honors Program


There were 18 students selected as Presidential Scholars at Cleveland State. The students and their high schools they attended are as follows:

Madison Kachel is a graduate of Bradley Central High School. While enrolled at BCHS, she was involved in the Skills USA Competition and volunteered with the holiday food drive. She plans to major in an Industrial Technology field. Madison is the daughter of Faith Stooks Burr of Cleveland and Murry Kachel of Del Rio, TX.

Cade Baker is a graduate of Bradley Central High School where he was involved in FCA, DECA, Drama Club, Spirit Club and was Student Council President. He volunteered at various activities including Christmas Memories as well as the Salvation Army Christmas Delivery. Cade is the daughter of Daniel Baker and Amanda Phillips of Cleveland.

“I look forward to the smaller classes at CSCC where I can learn from everyone in the room,” stated Baker. “I’m also looking forward to getting very involved within the institution and getting to know everyone and starting this journey! I want to push myself beyond my limits academically, and I have a goal of figuring out and pin pointing exactly what I want to do with my life after CSCC.”

Thalia Cruz is a graduate of Bradley Central High School where she was involved in the National Honor Society. While enrolled at BCHS, she performed volunteer work for the Cleveland Goodwill. Thalia is the daughter of Joel and Tina Cruz of Cleveland.

Alexandra Paladian is a graduate of Cleveland High School where she was involved in the National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Beta Club, Anchor Club, Science Olympiad, EAA Club, Colorguard and Winterguard. She volunteered at Brookdale of Cleveland and assisted with the Mouse Creek Clean-Up and Arnold Elementary Science Nights. Alexandra is the daughter of Roman and Nadia Bindr of Cleveland.

Sofia Stamatiadis is a graduate of Cleveland High School where she was a member of the volleyball and basketball teams, Anchor Club, FCA and HOSA. While enrolled at CHS, she volunteered at Blythe Bower Elementary School and also participated in a Christmas toy drive in Dayton, TN with the CHS Basketball Team. Sofia is the daughter of Konstantine and Kellye Stamatiadis.

Abigail Harbison is a graduate of Copper Basin High School where she was a member of the Student Council, HOSA, Key Club and served as the Lady Cougar Basketball Manager. While enrolled at CBHS, she also volunteered at Copper Basin Elementary School. Abigail is the daughter of Angie Harbison of Copperhill and Greg and Paula Harbison of Delano.

Heather Brewer is a graduate of L & N STEM Academy where she was a member of the Antiquarians, National Honor Society, National Society of High School. She volunteered in her community through monthly venturing projects, the Crane Days Festival and other events with Antiquarians. Heather is the daughter of Robert and Dawn Brewer of Knoxville.

Patricia Pangle is a graduate of McMinn Central High School where she was involved in the Manga Club, Reading Club and was a member of the volleyball team. She volunteered at the local library, Etowah City Schools and Toys for Tots. Patricia is the daughter of Chris and Jeana Pangle of Etowah.

Josh Couch is a graduate of Meigs County High School where he was a member of the League of Extraordinary Teens, Mu Alpha Theta, Marching Band, History Club, Upward Bound, FBLA, and Concert Band. He volunteered in his community through the Upward Bound program and performed some community construction with Ace Hardware. Josh is the son of Bruce and Margaret Couch of Decatur.

Logan Ball is a graduate of Meigs County High School where he was involved in assisting with the green house. While enrolled in MCHS, he volunteered in his community cleaning up debris after the tornado devastation in Athens. Logan is the son of Michael and Terrie Ball of Ten Mile.

Sabrina Furgal is a graduate of Meigs County High School. While enrolled at MCHS, she was involved in Meigs County FFA horse judging, McMinn 4-H horse club, McMinn 4-H horse judging, McMinn 4-H Equine Drill team and horse showing throughout the east and middle Tennessee areas. She volunteered with home vet Dr. William Moss as well as in her community with the McMinn 4-H and Meigs FFA organizations. Sabrina is the daughter of Wayne and Karen Furgal of Decatur.

 

Austin Laymon is a graduate of Meigs County High School where he was involved in the Marching Band, History Club, Upward Bound, Spanish Club, FBLA and the Concert Band. While enrolled in MCHS, he volunteered in his community with the college litter pick up program, job shadowing and Upward Bound programs. Austin is a graduate of Wayne and Toni Laymon of Decatur.

Sydney McAbee is a graduate of Polk County High School where she was involved in soccer, Science Club, Prom Planning committee, Beta club, and National Honor Society. While enrolled at PCHS, she volunteered in her community tutoring elementary and middle school students, as well as worked with the Boys and Girls Club and the Polk County Library. She is the daughter of Tracy and Amy McAbee of Benton.

Lauren Bodenhamer is a graduate of Walker Valley High School where she was a member of the Band, Anchor Club, Beta Club and the National English Honor Society. She volunteered at the Unity Center and the Salvation Army. Lauren is the daughter of Doug Bodenhamer of Cleveland and Janet May of Murphy, NC.
