Cleveland State and Museum Center at 5ive Points Announce Partnership

Posted on August 25, 2014

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – When Cleveland State Community College and the Museum Center at 5ive Points realized that they were in the same business, teaching and preserving history, they just had to get together! Cleveland State does a little more teaching than preserving history, and the Museum Center does a little more preserving than teaching, but what a perfect fit! Cleveland State Community College and The Museum Center announced a new partnership between the two—one that will allow the faculty at CSCC to be able to use the Museum as a teaching lab, something that will also benefit the students.

“Our new partnership allows faculty to develop new and engaging opportunities that creatively draw upon the resources of the Museum,” stated Dr. Denise King, Vice President for Academic Affairs. We are excited about the possibilities this collaboration will open up for student and faculty projects.”

In addition to these educational benefits, CSCC faculty, staff and students are also eligible to receive

  • Free admission to the Museum where general admission is a requirement
  • Access to member-only events such as member-only exhibit openings
  • Member discounts on programming where there is a member/non-member rate

(These benefits are also available to the spouses and immediate children of faculty, staff and students.)

The agreement also discussed the following

  • Collaborative planning between the Museum’s Curator of Education and the faculty of CSCC to identify course-related opportunities.
  • Use of the facility when available for teaching courses and / or classroom visits.
  • CSCC will subsidize a speaker series to be held at the Museum Center at 5ive Points. Speakers will engage the audience on topics of interest that correlate to thematic ideas found in temporary and/or permanent exhibitions

“In keeping with our strategic planning theme of “Community First,” I am excited that we have developed this partnership with the Museum,” stated Dr. Bill Seymour, Cleveland State President. “Now, all of our students, faculty, staff and their families will be able to take advantage of the educational opportunities available at the Museum. This will enhance our academic programs and commitment to cultural awareness.”

Hassan Najjar, Executive Director of the Museum Center at 5ive Points, said, “We are excited about including Cleveland State as one of our community partners at the museum. We've identified some key areas for collaboration that will allow their students and staff to take advantage of the museum's collection in ways that enhance their curricular needs. I'm looking forward to working with Dr. Seymour and his leadership team as they prepare 21st century students to meet the needs of a 21st century economy.”
