Designing bridges, building towers, purifying water, and making bath salts! Sixteen young women recently attended the Girls in Engineering Summer STEAM Camp at Cleveland State and completed these projects and more. Sponsored by Nokian Tyres, the camp explored a different field of engineering each day - Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Environmental.
Female engineers from area industries were guest speakers discussing their education path and job responsibilities as an engineer. Volunteers from the Society of Women Engineers and the Million Women Mentors hosted each day and guided the projects.
Blake Markham, Senior HR Manager - North America at Nokian Tyres, said “It was great to support the Girls in Engineering Camp and to see so many budding engineers at work. Nokian Tyres cares about doing our part to foster the next generation of female engineers, and we appreciate the opportunity to be part of this event.”
STEAM Camps at Cleveland State introduce young students to fields in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math,” stated Andrea Byerly, CSCC Continuing Education Project Coordinator. “Inspiring our future workforce and providing young students with the tools they need to excel in STEAM areas is our goal.”
Although the summer STEAM camps are coming to a close, the 2023 Summer STEAM Camp schedule will be available in March 2023. For more information, visit mycs.cc/STEAM.
