Service-Learning Courses

Spring 2012 Semester Orientation Sessions

All students registering for a service-learning class should attend an orientation session to learn how to access their syllabus, assignments, and class materials at Online@CSCC. Advance reservations are not required. Contact the service-learning office at (423) 614-8718 or service_learning@clevelandstatecc.edu with any questions.


If you have already signed up for a SLE Class, please attend a SLE Orientation to start your course.  This orientation lasts under one hour and will cover the course syllabus, assignments and community service placement discussion.  Pick the time & location that is most convenient for you:

Do you want to make a difference in your own community by participating in an existing project or do you have an idea for your own project that will address a community need? Get involved in Service-Learning at Cleveland State and earn college credit while making a difference!

Open to all Students:

SLE 2400 Service-Learning Project I (3 credits)

This course allows the student to be involved in a service-learning project in community service agencies, providing an opportunity during the collegiate experience to learn about and address community needs. Through the community placement and class seminars, the course helps the student develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and reflective skills, and strives to increase the student's understanding of community and societal needs. The student completes 50 hours of volunteer service during the semester.

SLE 2500 Service-Learning Project II (3 credits)

A continuation of SLE 2400, Service-Learning Project I, this course is designed to promote experiential learning for Cleveland State students through a service experience. Students enrolled in SLE 2500 actively participate in an existing service project -or- plan and implement a service project designed to meet a community need. The student reflects on their experiences in class discussions and a reflection journal/portfolio. The student will complete 50 hours of service during the semester.

SLE 2410 Service-Learning Experience (1 credit)

This course allows the student to be involved in a service-learning project in a community service agency, providing an opportunity during the collegiate experience to learn about and address community needs. This course helps the student develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and reflective skills, and strives to increase the student's understanding of community and societal needs. The student completes 20 hours of volunteer service during the semester and participates in class seminars.

SLE 2420 Service-Learning Experience (1 credit)

Continuation of service-learning experience. Requires 20 hours of volunteer service and reflection activities.

SLE 2430 Service-Learning Experience (1 credit)

Continuation of service-learning experience. Requires 20 hours of volunteer service and reflection activities.

For Construction Majors:

CST 2400 Construction Technology: Service-Learning - Habitat (3 credits)

This course enables students to have hands-on involvement in a Habitat project where many of the concepts presented in a class are put into practical application. The processes and policies used by the Habitat organization provide monitoring of the student participation and involvement. Three hours on-site work per week.
