What is a QEP?

According to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges’ website, “the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is a document developed by the institution that (1) includes a process identifying key issues emerging from institutional assessment, (2) focuses on learning outcomes and/or the environment supporting student learning and accomplishing the mission of the institution, (3) demonstrates institutional capability for the initiation, implementation, and completion of the QEP, (4) includes broad-based involvement of institutional constituencies in the development and proposed implementation of the QEP, and (5) identifies goals and a plan to assess their achievement” (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, 2022).

At Cleveland State Community College, the Quality Enhancement Plan is defined as an institutional-wide, opportunistic plan for enhancing and improving student success, student learning, and institutional outcomes over a five-year period.

Why is a QEP Important to CSCC?

The Quality Enhancement Plan allows Cleveland State Community College to develop, implement, and assess a strategic, institution-wide plan. This plan empowers CSCC and its stakeholders to focus on a data-driven and informed topic in which student success, student learning, and overall institutional continuous improvement can be enhanced.

The QEP can assist:

  • Students (present, past, and future)
  • Faculty
  • Staff
  • Administrators
  • Institution Overall
  • Local Communities
  • Local Industry/Business
  • Local K-12 Students

Why is a QEP important to students?

The QEP is an opportunity to enhance current and future institutional quality and effectiveness. Through outcome-aligned assessment, improved processes, data-informed strategies, and collaborative stakeholder involvement, CSCC can use the QEP to increase student learning, student success, and overall institutional outcomes.

By bettering our institution, we can better our students and communities!


SACSCOC Standard 7.2

“The institution has a Quality Enhancement Plan that (a) has a topic identified through its ongoing, comprehensive planning and evaluation processes; (b) has broad-based support of institutional constituencies; (c) focuses on improving specific student learning outcomes and/or student success; (d) commits resources to initiate, implement, and complete the QEP; and (e) includes a plan to assess achievement.”

SACSCOC Quality Enhancement Plan – An Evaluative Framework

SACSCOC uses “the framework presented below to assist evaluators in focusing and articulating their professional judgment. The component parts of the matrix are not summative, nor are they necessarily of equal weight. Reviewers will need to evaluate and weigh the issues when arriving at a judgment about the institution’s compliance with the requirement”.
