Prior Learning Assessment

THERE'S VALUE IN WHAT YOU KNOW - SEE IF YOU'RE ALREADY AHEAD!

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) measures the knowledge that students acquire while living their lives. This can be acquired by working, participating in employer training programs, serving in the military, studying independently, volunteering or doing community service.

Cleveland State offers several methods for students to earn PLA credit:

  • Credit by external exam (CLEP, DSST, AP, IB)
  • Military experience and training
  • Dual Credit
  • Portfolio Assessment
  • Institutional Course Exam

  •
Students considered as good candidates to pursue PLA credit may have some of these attributes:

  • Earned certificates or have taken non-credit courses
  • Have served in the military
  • Have significant work experience
  • Have earned some college credit already
  • Have enhanced pre-admission scores
  • Should have strong writing skills
