Dual Credit

DUAL CREDIT FAQS

What is Dual Credit?

Dual Credit is an opportunity for students to earn college credits while still in high school. Like Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Enrollment, these classes are rigorous, meeting college-level learning objectives and giving students a chance to shorten their tenure in college by earning credit hours for Cleveland State Community College before they even enroll!

How does it work?

Students explore classes that interest them. Per agreements with CSCC, some of those classes may be eligible for Dual Credit. While in a Dual Credit course, students challenge themselves to learn college-level concepts. Students then test their mastery of the subject with a final exam. If they pass with the required grade, they earn credit hours for the corresponding college class upon enrollment at CSCC.

Who Benefits?

Any student taking Dual Credit courses benefits, regardless if he/she passes or not! In fact, studies have shown that participation in early post-secondary opportunities, like Dual Credit, helps students develop the necessary skills, including study strategies and self-confidence, to be successful in college. More importantly, students who take advantage of early post-secondary opportunities are more likely to enroll and persist in college.

Statewide Dual Credit vs. Local Dual Credit

Statewide Dual Credit courses are created, proctored, and evaluated by the Tennessee Department of Education and provide academically challenging high school courses which are aligned to post-secondary standards. When taking Statewide Dual Credit courses, students have the opportunity to earn credit that can be applied to any TN public post-secondary institution.

Local Dual Credit courses also provide academically challenging high school courses which are aligned to post-secondary standards. However, these courses are created, proctored, and evaluated by Cleveland State Community College and offer students the opportunity to earn credit that can be applied at CSCC.

Do students need to attend Cleveland State Community College in order to receive their credits?

If the Dual Credit is a Local Dual Credit, yes. As a Local Dual Credit offering, the agreement between CSCC and local high schools guarantees college credit hours for students who successfully complete the corresponding Dual Credit assessment upon enrollment at CSCC. Other schools may recognize CSCC Local Dual Credit at their own discretion.

If the Dual Credit is a Statewide Dual Credit, it should be accepted at any Tennessee public post-secondary institution.
