VONORE, Tenn. – Serena Young was recently hired as the new Coordinator for the Monroe County Center for Cleveland State Community College. Young has worked for the college for five years and comes to the position from the Maintenance Department.
Some of Young’s responsibilities include coordinating student relations activities, aiding in the development of programs and students services which will enhance student retention, assisting the Director of Off-Campus Centers in overseeing the general and daily operations and management of the Monroe County Center and performing duties related to the success of off-site locations. She will also work in cooperation with admissions and records, financial aid, counseling and career services, enrollment services and other divisions of the college and community.
“Serena was hired as the coordinator of the Monroe County Center,” stated Patty Weaver, Director of Off Campus Centers. “She will be responsible for the daily operations, as well as working with the community handling any special events that are going on at the Center. Serena is very energetic and will be a great asset to the Monroe Center. She is extremely enthusiastic about growing the enrollment at the center and working with local business and industry to help meet demands in the workforce.”
According to Weaver, the intent for the Center is to build programs that will meet both the local industry and workforce demands and shortages. CSCC recently completed a grant application for the Labor Education Alignment Program (LEAP 2.0) in collaboration with Pellissippi State that will provide CSCC with approximately $500,000 to purchase equipment for our electrical maintenance program, and are working with the local school system to build career pathways in advanced manufacturing. This is the second round of grant money from the state department. CSCC received LEAP 1.0, in collaboration with TCAT, used to purchase equipment for three high schools—McMinn, Bradley and Cleveland. If received, this money will be used to purchase equipment for the Monroe County Center to provide training for both credit and non-credit classes.
CSCC President Dr. Bill Seymour stated, “In order to accomplish what we have planned for that center, we needed a full time person. Serena is an outstanding employee for the college. She served as the Staff Senate President and given her experience, I have full confidence in her to take on this kind of position.”
“I am very excited about this new opportunity,” stated Young. “I love being able to work with Patty—she is a great leader, mentor and friend. There are great people here, and they have all been very welcoming.”
Young continued, “CSCC is growing, and this is a prime opportunity for us to establish our presence in the Monroe County community. This center will not only benefit the students here, but also the community.”
The CSCC Monroe County Center is located at 121 Grand Vista in the Tellico West Industrial Park. Office hours are Monday-Thursday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.
