CLEVELAND, TN. – Cleveland State Community College is holding its Spring 2017 Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 6 at 10 a.m. in the L. Quentin Lane Gymnasium and will be welcoming a familiar face to the college—Governor Bill Haslam is going to be the keynote speaker for the occasion. Approximately 450 students of Cleveland State’s class of 2017 will receive degrees and certificates during the spring 2017 Commencement Ceremony.

“Cleveland State was very fortunate to have Governor Haslam on our campus the first day TN Promise students attended college back in 2015,” stated Dr. Bill Seymour, Cleveland State President. “We are even more honored that he is coming back to see this first group graduate along with others completing their degrees. I can't think of a better way to wrap up our 50th Anniversary year.”

Under Governor Haslam’s leadership, Tennessee was the first state in the nation to offer high school graduates two years of community or technical college free of tuition and fees. Just three years into the governor’s Drive to 55 initiative to increase the number of Tennesseans with a postsecondary degree or certificate to 55 percent by 2025, more Tennesseans are going to college and fewer need remediation when they get there. In fact, first-time freshmen enrollment increased 25 percent at community colleges and 20 percent at technical colleges in one year, and the college-going rate in Tennessee increased to a historic high of 62.5 percent in 2015.

Haslam and his wife, Crissy, have been married for 35 years. They have three children and six grandchildren.

For those who are unable to attend the commencement ceremony, it will also be broadcast live online through the Cleveland State website at www.clevelandstatecc.edu and on WTNB Channel 5 at 10 a.m.
