CSCC student Justin Deal recently received a 2017 Point Foundation Scholarship. Out of 2,000 applicants, Deal was one of 52 scholarship recipients total, and only 25 of those were community college scholarship recipients.

The Point Community College Program Foundation inspires LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) community college students to fulfill their ambitions of attending a four-year college or university. Students accepted into this program will receive up to $3,700 tuition scholarship, admissions counseling, coaching and financial education at the Point Community College Transfer Symposium in Los Angeles and access to the Point Foundation network of LGBTQ scholars, more than 300 alumni and many others dedicated to seeing LGBTQ students succeed.

“Justin is an outstanding student and leader on our campus,” stated Dr. Bill Seymour, CSCC President. “I am proud of his accomplishments and this national recognition.”

Dr. Victoria Bryan, Honors Program Director / Assistant Professor of English, stated, “I’m unbelievably proud of Justin. He is the first member of our honors program who has earned a national scholarship and the only person in Tennessee who won a scholarship from this organization this year.”

According to Bryan, the application process was lengthy and included several rounds of questionnaires and interviews. “Justin and I worked on several drafts of his application and statement of purpose. He completed this process all while running for Student Senate President, applying for the Presidential Honors Scholarship, completing the Honors Learning Community, applying to speak on a panel at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference in Atlanta and maintaining his GPA as a pre-medical professions major.”

During his interview process, Deal was asked to provide a one minute video telling about someone who inspired him, and he chose to do his video on Bryan.

“I love how she is so outgoing and willing to help students,” stated Deal. “She always goes the extra mile and dedicates so much time to the honors program and the Allies program on campus. She is always creating social outlets for students to be a part of.”

Deal continued, “I was shocked and humbled to receive this scholarship. To know that 2,000 students applied, and only 25 community college students received this scholarship made me very grateful to have been chosen.”

After CSCC, Deal plans to transfer to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) to take advantage of the articulation agreement between CSCC and UTC for the honors program. He plans to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and later transfer to the University of Memphis to pursue medical school.
