CLEVELAND, TN - Cleveland State Community College Foundation will host one of Britain’s most inspiring pianists on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024. Nicholas McCarthy was born without his right hand and rose above many obstacles to study at the Royal College of Music in London. He is the only one-handed pianist to graduate from this prestigious school.

Presented by the Bank of Cleveland, an Evening with Nicholas McCarthy will include a reception, dinner and performance at the Museum and Cultural Center at 5ive Points on Feb. 22, 2024. Tickets are $125 per person and are available through the Cleveland State website, mycs.cc/eveningwith. All proceeds from the event go to the Cleveland State Foundation, which provides support for the college and hundreds of scholarships to students each year.

As one of just a few soloists with a disability, McCarthy is a champion of the world of left-hand alone repertoire, which developed rapidly after World War I because of injuries suffered on the battlefield. Performing extensively around the world in some of the most prestigious concert halls, McCarthy’s performances, recordings and media features have gained him critical acclaim. Outside of his concert career, McCarthy is a corporate speaker and regularly delivers keynote talks to the world’s leading businesses and institutions.

Highlighting his commitment to encouraging new audiences to discover classical music and his dedication to working with young people through music education, McCarthy will visit the Unity Center in Cleveland where he will inspire Bradley County’s underserved youth. He will also speak to 1,000 middle and high school students from Cleveland State’s five-county service area on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024.

“Nicholas McCarthy has an extraordinary talent and an inspirational story,” stated Dr. John Squires, Cleveland State Interim Vice President of Workforce Development, Institutional Research, and Advancement. “Cleveland State is proud to host Nicholas in February, and we are excited to welcome so many young students to campus for his motivational presentation.”
